What Yoga Is (and Is Not)

Modern yoga practice usually combines physical poses (asanas), breathing practices (pranayama) and relaxation or meditation. You do not need to be flexible to start; flexibility is a result, not a requirement.

Styles in brief

Hatha classes tend to hold poses at a steady pace. Vinyasa links poses with the breath in a flow. Yin holds passive poses for several minutes. Restorative uses props for deep relaxation. This course teaches foundations that apply to all of them.

Step by step

  1. Practise on an empty or light stomach.
  2. Wear comfortable clothes and go barefoot on a mat.
  3. Move slowly and stay curious about how each pose feels.
  4. Rest in Child’s Pose any time you need.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing your poses with photos online.
  • Forcing deeper stretches.

Your practice

  • Write down one reason you want to practise yoga.

Safety note: Move within a comfortable, pain-free range and breathe throughout. This lesson is general fitness education, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, recovering from an injury or surgery, or have a heart, blood-pressure, joint or other health condition, check with your doctor before you start. Stop and seek medical help if you feel chest pain, dizziness, faintness or unusual shortness of breath.
